This weekend, why don’t you put on your walking shoes and get active? Here are some ideas on what you can do.

 #1 Go on the MRT

With the MRT now, there’s never been a better time to explore Klang Valley to check out popular tourist attractions along with hidden gems. Plus, you’ll get a good workout with the walking from station to destination.

A few ideas? Stop at the Bukit Bintang Station and take a walk to Jalan Alor for its busy street food scene in the evening – exercise before digging in! Or make your way to the Taman Midah station on Saturdays where right next to it is a pasar malam.

Food aside, you can make a stop at the Bandar Utama station to check out the Rooftop Secret Garden in 1Utama Shopping Centre. Popular tourist destinations are also a short walk from the stations like Muzium Negara station and Pasar Seni station.

#2 Go For a Morning Hike

Head to Taman Tun Dr Ismail and spend an hour or two hiking in Bukit Kiara. The paths are well maintained and suitable for beginners but there are also some challenging uphill and downhill tracks deeper in for the more experienced hiker. Best part – it’s suitable for young children too so you can make it a family activity. Bring the mosquito repellent to ward off insects.

Other places to hit for hiking? FRIM, Templer’s Park and Bukit Gasing.

#3 Organise A Photo Excursion

Get some friends together and take a drive to Petaling Street. Park and then explore the streets and back lanes on foot for some pretty awesome photo opps of buildings as well as life in the city. Definitely Instagram-worthy! While you’re at it, check out the hip cafes in the area like Merchant’s Lane Café (a hidden gem with some of the most beautiful spots for your selfies and foodstagrams), Chocha Foodstore (for that old school charm) and PS150 (for evening cocktails!).

#4 Hit the Morning Market

Markets are messy, lively, chaotic and filled with life – which is precisely why you should check it out for a different kind of morning activity. Get your phone ready to snap rows and rows of fresh fruits and vegetables. Make sure to have your breakfast there too. Places to check out include Pudu Market, Imbi Market, Chow Kit, SS2 and Seksyen 17.

#5 Walk in the Park

Klang Valley is home to many beautiful parks – many of them set right in the city. There is the beautiful KLCC Park surrounded by lush greenery and the best view of the Petronas Twin Towers. Or the Perdana Botanical Gardens where you can cycle or  jog around its well-maintained grounds. The Kepong Metropolitan Park is popular with kite enthusiasts over the weekend; catch kits of all colours, shapes and sizes soaring the wind here while you enjoy the fresh outdoor breeze.

#6 Visit Farms with the Kids

Something for little ones to do – check out urban petting farms for a weekend of fun. At Mari House in Rawang, kids get to become little farmers and learn all about growing vegetables as well as get involved in preparing food for a picnic in their Fun Play Farming programme. There’s plenty of space too for them to run freely or catch fishes by the creek. Check out Mari House’s Facebook page for more details (www.facebook.ccom/MariHouseTP).

Tip: Make sure to track the number of steps you take with an activity tracker to keep tabs!
